Politics in Italy

The focus of my post comes from some old and recent news inside Italy dealing with an interesting person and politics. The name Silvio Berlusconi probably isn’t very familiar to anyone in America but in Italy the guy is very popular, and not for good reasons. Mr. Berlusconi is a very wealthy man who owns a variety of businesses. He was also the past prime minister of Italy and is involved with creating political parties who became very popular. He is also known for the numerous legal charges that have been filed against him for many years. They consist of tax fraud, corruption, embezzlement, and others. More recently he has been also charged for prostitution scandals. Despite all the charges and embarrassment this guy has gone through, he still has followers and actually still plays a big role in the politics. The political party People of Freedom, where Mr. Berlusconi is a head figure, has lots of popularity. The interesting thing about this topic and why I chose this news topic is because of the similarities in politics in Italy and in the U.S. In the U.S. there are multiple scandals that arise from politicians who go on to get reelected and run for different offices. I find it interesting that whether you are in the U.S. or in Italy, there are scandals that go on that involve political players who seem to never lose their careers or popularity. Even though this seems like a negative idea or topic it just interests me that unfortunately we have to have politicians that represent wrong things and that happens in all parts of the world and in different styles of government.

    Buona sera Dante,
Grazie per il tuo post. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Actually, Silvio Berlusconi is sadly popular in all Europe. In Spain we followed with shock all his scandals and corruption accusations but what perplexes me is how much he has to do before he even think about resigning and leave politics for good. Bad politicians, wrong leaders and especially corrupt governments are common place all over the world. In Spain we have a very low opinion of politics and the reason for that is the very bad example of past politicians.
